Susan and Lizzie ran today’s Mercedes Half Marathon. I’m so proud of my girls. They finished in 2:47:49 or so. Lizzie beat her mom by one second. See below for a picture of the Ward team near the finish.

I had the Valentines Krispy Kremes ready at the finish line as is our custom. Next year, I’m going to run this too, so someone else will have to get the doughnuts.

We had our first practice tonight, and Lizzie was very happy to be back on the pitch with her friends. It looks like we’re going to have a good season. I’ll update this site with the schedule for Spring 2010 as soon as we have the schedule.

While I’m snuggled warm in my Lazy boy, wrapped in my Alabama snuggie, Liz and Sue are running 10 miles in 28 degree weather as part of their training for the 2010 Mercedes Half Marathon. Liz has been doing great on the long runs with her mom. Susan and I are very proud.

After winning the Semi Finals game 4-0 the Lady Freedom fought hard against the Huntsville team in the Finals. The game tied 1-1 early and Lizzie made another great goal to bring her team ahead 2-1. Then, late in the second half, some “home cooking” gave the Huntsville team a cheap goal. Our goalie had picked up a ball that had gone out over the back line and began to place a goal kick, but the ref never called for a goal kick, and Huntville simply kicked the ball into the goal after the goalie placed it down on the turf.

The game ended tied after extra time, so we went to Penalty Kicks. Unfortunately our girls narrowly lost the PK battle, so we ended up in 2nd place. This was the best finish in a tournament since the team has been playing. We’re all very proud of our girls.

Just a quick update. The Lady Freedom are playing in the Semi Finals at 11:30 this morning. The record right now is 2-1.

This morning in the wildcard game, the girls scored 4 goals to beat the team that beat them yesterday morning. Now they play the semi final game at 11:30 and then, we expect to play in the finals this afternoon.

Lizzie scored the fourth goal in the wildcard game on a great left-footed shot. This is the best pic we have of the shot, but you can see the determination on Lizzie’s face, and that left leg doing great work.

Just in from our Team Manager:

In addition to our home game on Saturday, September 12th at 11:30 AM
v. the USC 98 Girls Power, we now also have an AWAY game in Phenix
City on Sunday, Sept 13th against the RCSC Lady Rangers at 4:30 PM on
Sunday, September 13th. Sorry for the late notice, but this was just
recently added to our schedule by the AYSA, and one of our own very
alert parents noticed it only this morning. Please note that Phenix
City is 2 ½ hours away.

Here is Lizzie’s first goal of the season! It was during a shootout where her team won on PK’s.
